Edible Flowers to try this Spring

We’re coming into Spring, which means new fresh produce to liven up your meals. But have you ever thought about giving your meals and desserts a little extra pizazz with fresh flowers?

Below is a list of the best flowers to start growing in your veggie patch that you should try this Spring!

**And if you don’t have a green thumb, we can order fresh edible flowers from the markets.

Hibiscus Flowers - The Hibiscus flowers produce large, beautiful blossoms that can come in red, white, yellow and various shades of pink. This flower is often found in teas, relish, jam or salads, but can be a decorative (and edible!) cake topper to really add a special something to your creation.

Lavender - Not only does Lavender have calming properties, but it is also often used in foods like baked goods, infused syrups, liqueurs and of course herbal teas. It does have quite an overpowering flavour, so it’s important to always start out with a small amount in cooking – a little goes a long way!

Squash Blossom - Did you know that the blossom is just as edible as the squash itself? Zucchini flowers are one of the most popular of the squash family and can be eaten raw as a garnish or chopped and added to salads. Such a versatile flower, making it great to add to any dish!

Pansy - Such a pretty, and tasty, flower! Their small blossoms come in many different colours including blue, purple, and yellow. Their taste is mild and fresh, making them a perfect decoration on cakes and pastries. They can even be added to a salad for a pop of colour or try adding them to an ice-cube tray and freezing in water to add to drinks.

Rose - There are so many different types of roses, all different sizes and colours, and ALL are edible! The petals are used in things like granola (when dried) or even in salads for colour and texture.

Marigolds - Use the tiny flowers of signet marigolds, such as Lemon Gem and Tangerine Gem. Their blossoms have a citrus taste.

Nasturtiums - Blossoms have a peppery flavour and are tasty in salads or as garnishes.

Liven up your palate and plate this Spring and start bringing in these beautiful blooms to deck out your next dish! Your friends and family will be impressed, and your food will be even more Instagram-able!
